There was a time when they were forcibly separated and you read about this often in the guide books.<\/p>\n<p>This temple didn&#8217;t have the usual big niomon wooden gate you usually see at these temples and that&#8217;s not too surprising. However, you could see the big red torii gate from a ways off that is a tell tale sign for a Shinto shrine. So, at first I thought might be off base. Then a big tour bus pulled up and the place filled up with ohenro so I knew I was okay.<\/p>\n<p>I usually don&#8217;t do much with the Shinto shrines as I don&#8217;t know how to show respect there.
