However, only 88 are on the official path but there a few others not numbered to the route and are not required to do in order to complete the circuit. These unnumbered ones are called Bangai since that’s what Bangai means. Generally, I haven’t gone to any of these before since they are usually off route and when you are on foot, every km counts.

Saba-Daishi was on route and I still almost missed it since it’s not signed the same way, not being an official temple. Glad I didn’t miss it though. It was kind of amazing.

It has the usual main hall and Daishi hall. The Daishi hall is dedicated to a story about Kobo Daishi and a mackerel, hence the fish. BUT, it also has this amazing underground tunnel too. It takes you past 88 Buddhist guardians and thousands and thousands and thousands of little Buddha statues too. Normally, it’s too dark to get pics in the tunnel well but the cleaning lights were on briefly and I got a pic there. The tunnel leads to an inner sanctum, much like the ones you usually give offerings outside of. However, this one was open to the public. Alas though, that was too dark for pics.

There are many temples started by or dedicated to Kukai (aka Kobo Daishi) who brought Shingon Buddhism to Japan.
